The idea crossed my mind when I saw a music YouTuber who was homeschooled. My mom had suggested homeschooling before and now I was thinking that it would be pretty cool if I could have the opportunity to do it! I would be able to travel and not be scared about getting behind in class, I would have free time to explore my interests and I would get to try something different that is not very common. I brought up the idea with her right away and she seemed pretty excited. Once she saw that I was serious about being homeschooled we started doing some research.
Online Learning:
We discovered that marks for grade 9’s in BC don’t count towards graduation, so if I did this it would have to be next year if I still want to go back to my school afterwards. We were also looking into doing distributed learning (DL) which is online learning through the school board. The only problem was that there were no french immersion courses so I didn’t know if I’d be able to stay in french immersion. My mom made a meeting with the school counsellor to ask her some questions about french immersion. She said that I would still be able to stay in french immersion but I wouldn’t get the bilingual dogwood certificate. I was fine with that because I’d still be able to continue learning french which I really like doing. We decided if this was going to work out I would probably not do any DL courses and just learn everything through projects that interest me and traveling.
Which brings me to another reason for me to be homeschooled. I would get to travel! We’ve been doing a lot of research on this and discovered that when you’re homeschooled, but traveling it’s called worldschooling. Since my mom and I love to travel we decided to go on some trips and road trips for quite a bit of the time. (My mom will still work from wherever we are and my dad will work and stay home with my dog and my younger brother, who doesn’t want to be homeschooled.) Anyways, my mom made an appointment with my counsellor who I used to see outside of school. She thought that it would be a great opportunity! So it was set. We decided that I’m going to be worldschooled for my grade 9 year!
